This time each year we remember the legacy of Dr. King and many times I return to his speech in Memphis on April 3, 1968. I’m always amazed and encouraged by his faith, conviction and passion and how that set the tone for his life.
I’ve chosen to live my life remembering and honoring my family, and the many men and women throughout the history of America, who sacrificed everything for me to have equal access to every resource this nation has to offer. And as Daddy, I am committed to continuing that legacy by teaching my daughter all that I can.
Here an excerpt from a piece I wrote for her that captures some of that commitment:
Some time ago
my baby girl learned to say “No”
and empowered herself
and joined the resistance
The simplicity of affirmation
and rejection
of options is the foundation for the morality
I hope to teach and model and believe in
and the faith I hope to live out
each day
